A RICKSHAW PULLER WHO SET UP NINE SCHOOLS FROM HIS SAVINGS
A good deed needs a good intention, not huge riches, nor immense manpower. A rickshaw puller from Karimganj district of Assam, Ahmed Ali, has proved the power of magnanimity and humanity when out of his own savings he set up nine schools in Karimganj district and earned the appreciation of none other than the Prime Minister of the country.
Ahmed Ali's name created ripples in all corners of the country on Sunday, the March 25th when Shri Narendra Modi mentioned his noble deed in his Mann Ki Baat. The nation was astounded by the gargantuan achievement of this humble man who even sold a piece of his land to set up a lower primary school in 1978. Aided by small collections from other villagers he repeated this feat many times in the last forty years, establishing as many as eight other schools in Madhurband and nearby villages. He is the one who has taken the leadership in setting up three lower primary schools, five upper primary schools and one high school.
Ali inherited 36 bighas of land from his father. Out of this he has donated 32 bighas for the purpose of setting up schools. Despite this rare magnanimity he has shunned publicity. Only one of the schools bears his name, that too because of the insistence of the villagers. The other eight schools do not bear his name.
Speaking to Times of India, Ahmed Ali says, "I have a dream to establish at least ten schools in my locality. I now want to set up a Junior College without delay so that no student from a poor family has to abandon studies after passing out of Class Ten......I had dropped out of school due to poverty. It pained me. I don't want to see dropouts from poor families any more. I feel joy when I see boys and girls from the village attending school." (TOI 26 March 2018)
The humble Samaritan expresses his gratitude to his friends, neighbours and the media for encouraging him to continue his good work. He also acknowledges the government's contribution in providing funds for further development of the schools.
Krishnendu Paul the MLA of Patharkandi pays compliments to Ali, "We are proud of Ali and his dreams and drive for education, which garnered the attention of the Prime Minister." While listening to the Mann Ki Baat program with his wife, three sons and relatives, Ali's face lit up when he heard his name, "I began my work by the wish of Allah and achieved some success by means of blessings from locals"
PositiveVibes.Today pays its tribute to this great, humble soul. Let there be many more Ahmed Alis in all corners of the country to dispel the darkness of illiteracy and ignorance by lighting the lamp of education.
