SERVING THE LIVING AND THE DEAD - A LESSON IN HUMANITY
In the hilly environs of Shimla there is a humanist who has dedicated his life to serving the living and the dead with a rare dedication and commitment. Sarbjeet Singh Bobby runs a shoe business in the town but devotes almost all his time at the major hospitals to serve food to the needy and whenever required to ferry the dead from the hospital premises to the burial ground.
It all started in 2007 when Sarbjeet Singh (popularly called Vela Bobby meaning the One who does no work and has a lot of time in his hands) started a free funeral van at all hours of day and night for transporting dead bodies. Sarbjeet was aware of the hardship people faced hiring vehicles for carrying dead bodies. After evening it becomes almost impossible. Inspired by the goodwill and gratitude shown by the public Sarbjeet started an organisation called Almighty Blessings which engages in multifarious humanist activities. It has helped in collecting more than 20000 units of blood for many hospitals and nursing homes. All the blood donation centres keep his telephone number and contact him whenever there is a crisis and Sarbjeet comes to their rescue.
For the last twelve years Sarbjeet has been organising outings for the residents of several orphanages and old-age homes in and around Shimla. He also organises clothes donation drive for poor patients and construction workers to save them from the bitter cold of Shimla.
In 2014 Sarbjeet started a free canteen for the patients and their attendants at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital in Shimla. The canteen offers tea, biscuits throughout the day, soup and daliya as well as a meal of daal and chawal. It is a great blessing for the patients and their attendants, particularly from the poorer sections who would be already groaning under the burden of huge medical expenses.
As a further act of magnanimity Almighty Blessings launched another free canteen in 2016 at the Kamala Nehru Hospital. In an extraordinary initiative Sarbjeet Singh has opened five chapati banks in Sanjauli, Totu, Kasumpati, Lakkar Bazar and Lower Bazar to gather chapatis.
PositiveVibes.Today salutes this Good Samaritan and wishes that in other towns and cities similar initiatives should be taken up by kind souls to serve humanity. Sarbjeet singh himself says that we should serve only humanity and not any particular religion, because humanity is the biggest religion.
The accompanying video speaks volumes about this extra-ordinary human being devoted to the cause of humanity.
