DELIGHTED BOY

Anura Parida

A boy not older than five,

His body and mind so energetically alive.

He smiles at his mother,

His eyes glistened with love, hugging her.

His eyes, dreamy with sleep,

At the corner of his eye, something made his heart leap.

His dreamy eyes now peep,

His father making a boat, something interesting and unique.

He sits down sleepy in his father’s lap,

A boat made of bamboo vertically into two snapped.

He sat down, his hands around his knees wrapped,

A bamboo turned into a small boat; his feet stopped the anxious tap.

He brought a few sticker gems,

To enhance the boat to show it to his friends.

He went to show it to his mother,

But saw her, immersed and concentrated more than others.

A beautiful pattern from coloured sand,

Carved by his mother’s hand.

He shoved his boat to his mother,

Down he sat, intrigued by the colours.

On foot, they walked,

Early dawn, the sun supposedly baulked.

Near the pond, the boat in his grip, the little boy gawked,

Something mesmerising his eyes caught.

A hundred or so gleaming on the pond,

The boats perfectly stowed on this heavenly abode.

He waddles on his little legs on the path he strode,

The moon aligned them as they bestowed.

The family sits by the shore,

Performing the rituals and many more.

Hands joined together, eyes closed and fixed,

The mantra brushes quietly past those lips.

The little boy lit his boat alight,

As he blows the boat to float on the holy night.

His boat directly under the rays of the moonlight,

No one can break that smile of utter delight.

ADVENTURE IN LOUVRE

Adya Mohanty

“Can you believe we’re going to Paris tomorrow?” Heidi exclaimed as she carefully constructed a miniature Eiffel Tower out of toothpicks.

“The best part is visiting the Louvre Museum! We’ll see the Mona Lisa and so much more fascinating stuff!” Lucy said excitedly, helping Heidi balance a wobbly piece.

“I wonder if we’ll get to visit the real Eiffel Tower or maybe that famous palace there,” Bella mused dreamily.

“But what if we get to stay in a fancy hotel?” Melanie chimed in, twirling her hair.

“We’re basically going to live in Paris!” Lucy declared.

“Lucy, we’re only going for a week,” Heidi said with a laugh.

“But a week in Paris feels like living there!” Bella agreed enthusiastically.

“Paris is going to be SO much fun!” Heidi said, her voice full of excitement.

“Who wouldn’t want to go to Paris?” Melanie asked, her eyes wide with anticipation.

“Guys…” Lucy tried to get their attention, but everyone kept talking. “Paris is the best!” Heidi said.

“GUYS!!!” Lucy shouted. Everyone froze, startled by her sudden outburst.

“Geez, Lucy,” Melanie muttered.

“We should start packing,” Lucy said firmly. “We leave tomorrow.”

“Then let’s get to it!” Bella said, clapping her hands.

The next day, they were so excited that they woke up at 5 a.m. After devouring stacks of pancakes and donuts, they got dressed, went to school, and hopped on the bus to the airport. The hour-long drive felt like it passed in seconds. At the airport, Mrs. Peach, their teacher, did a quick headcount of the 29 students. Once everyone was accounted for, they checked in, passed through security, and finally boarded the plane.

Lucy sat with Bella, while Heidi and Melanie shared a row. As the plane soared into the sky, Bella napped, Lucy read a book, Heidi stared out the window, and Melanie layered her lips with gloss.

“Melanie, why so much lip gloss?” Heidi asked, raising an eyebrow. “Because I can,” Melanie replied, adding yet another coat. Heidi sighed. Melanie was... well, Melanie. After six hours, they landed in Paris.

Excitement buzzed in the air as the students stepped into the French sunshine.

“Alright, everyone,” Mrs. Peach said. “Let’s head to the Louvre Museum.” Thirty minutes later, they arrived at the grand museum, marveling at the art and sculptures. They admired masterpieces like The Wedding at Cana before making their way to the Mona Lisa. But something was wrong. People were leaving the room in a hurry.

“Excuse me,” Bella asked a security guard, “why is everyone leaving?”

“Haven’t you heard?” the guard said gravely. “The Mona Lisa has been stolen!”

“AAAHH!” Lucy screamed. Melanie fainted dramatically, only to be revived by Heidi slapping her cheek.

“Ouch! What was that for?” Melanie snapped, glaring at Heidi.

“Stay awake!” Heidi ordered.

As the room emptied, Mrs. Peach sighed. “Well, it seems we won’t be seeing the Mona Lisa today.”

“That’s not fair!” Bella said.

“Let’s do something about it,” Heidi whispered. The others nodded, determination lighting their eyes.

“Who did it?” Lucy asked as they began investigating.

A museum worker named Diana approached them. “You’re not supposed to be here,” she said curtly.

“Where were you?” Heidi asked, narrowing her eyes.

“I was at the statue,” Diana replied before walking away quickly.

“Guys, look!” Bella pointed to a narrow crack in the wall. The four squeezed through, entering a dark, smelly passage. The air reeked of macaroni and rotten feta cheese mixed with 9 century old peas!

Suddenly, they stopped. There was Diana, clutching the Mona Lisa!

“AAHHH!” Melanie screamed, her voice echoing through the tunnel. The others joined in. The noise brought the guards running. The guards caught Diana red-handed and returned the painting to its rightful place. Cheers erupted as the painting was carefully restored to its case under tight security.

That evening, as the group stood at the base of the glowing Eiffel Tower, Mrs. Peach congratulated them.

“Well done, everyone. I think this calls for a celebratory croissant!”

The students laughed, their excitement reigniting. They took countless photos, soaking in the magical Parisian night.

“We actually helped save the Mona Lisa!” Heidi said, shaking her head in disbelief.

“It’s a story for the ages,” Lucy added with a grin.

“And it’s only day one!” Bella said, looking up at the sparkling tower.

Paris had already lived up to its magic, and their adventure was just beginning!
