Kudumbashree had always been in the forefront to support the innovative enterprises as well as the enterprises in the traditional livelihood sector and were helping the Neighborhood group women earn livelihood of their own. The Pulari pottery unit functioning at the Olavanna Panchayath of Kozhikode district of Kerala is one such enterprise which has been receiving the assistance of Kudumbashree Mission.
Evolution of Pulari Pottery Unit
The pottery making done by the family members of Smt. T. Kamalakshi, Secretary of the unit was introduced to the other neighborhood group members by Kudumbashree Mission. The unit, which was started during March 2009, has Smt. Latha, who is the President of the unit, Smt. Lakshmi, Smt. Bindu and Smt. Thankamani as members. The clay for making the pottery is brought from Palakkad, Wayanad and Vadakara. The sales of their products is usually seasonal. They are making better income out of their venture. The Pulari Pottery unit is not only making pottery, but also toys for children as well.
Kudumbashree had extended special training to the unit, at the training programme held at Thaliparamba of Kannur district of Kerala and thereby brought this unit into enterprise sector. For starting the venture, Rs 2 lakhs was availed as bank loan, out of which Rs 1 lakh was given as subsidy. Also, Rs. 30,000 was given as revolving fund. They are selling their products through trade fairs and local sales as well. Though they had faces many agonies during the unprecedented floods, they hope that everything would get better soon.

It is the unity and confidence of the team members that made Pulari Pottery unit a success. The success story of this group of women can undoubtedly be considered an embodiment of women empowerment and resilience.
