LONELY BOAT

Juan Lenju

I  am Juan Lenju, brother  of Julian Lenju. I am in the fourth grade at Dawn International  School. I am nine years old, kind and friendly, and looking out for adventures. I like making new friends, swimming, playing football and drawing. I sketch very fast and most of my drawings end up like cartoons. That is what my grandma says. I am happy helping others and animals and even insects. I like learning new things and even languages. I communicate in Hindi with my sibling, which only we understand. Sometimes, I create on-the-spot short stories and recite them to the amazement of my granny, who says it is spoken word poetry. My aim, now is to become a footballer. I also like to make people around me laugh and smile.  I like being called Dany, which is my pet name.

WILL I LOSE MYSELF IN THE DARK?

Anura Parida

You say that darkness is eerie,
The fear of the unknown, the fear of your mind.
A fear so deep,
It keeps the mind awake at night.

But when the midnight sky has the northern star bright,
When a darkroom can have a light.
When that street light flickers at night,
Why fear when you can make things right.

This fear was never from the dark, you see,
Nor because of the pitch black sea.
This fear runs deep in the mind,
But for every fear there are remedy.

It was not the darkness that made me, thump my heart hard.
It was not the monsters that come out, when it gets dark.
There was only one thought which bothered me,
Will I lose myself in the dark?

Will I forget in the dark?
Will I forget my path?
Will I become weak?
Or will I become timid?

Thoughts run wild in my head,
As I stand there motionless in the dark.
"Just remember to turn on the light",
Said a tiny voice from my heart.

I am Anura Parida, a 12-year-old creative writer currently studying in the 8th grade. Ever since I can remember, words have been my closest companions, and poetry has become my heartfelt expression.

Through my writing, I explore the tapestry of emotions that color my world – from the joy of friendship to the contemplation of life's mysteries.

Besides being a writer, I am an avid reader, devouring classics and contemporary literature alike, which helps me expand my creative horizons.

Art, in all its forms, holds a special place in my heart, and I enjoy sketching and painting to complement my poetic musings. Thank you for reading, and I look forward to sharing this beautiful world of creative writing with you all!

RUNNY AND THE FORBIDDEN CAVE PART-1

Rohith V Rahul

Runny is a daring crow who gained many riches by doing various schemes.
Runny now sits in his nest thinking to himself, what should I do next?
He has already defeated Escadama, a ferocious eagle and the leader of the fighter gang, one of the most powerful avian criminal groups in avian history.
Suddenly, the newspaper crow came and delivered his newspaper.
Avian newspapers were simple.
News was written on leaves and then etched out by crows.
These leaves were delivered to people by fast-flying birds.
Two news pieces could be fitted into one leaf — one piece of news on one side of the leaf and the other news on the other side of the leaf.
Today’s news was a bit strange.
Runny read it aloud:
“Secret new cave discovered — might hold treasure.
Our team of specialized scientific birds have recently went into a cave. Although strange rumbling noises can be heard from the caves, they think it is just water flowing. So far, the cave is very deep in length, spanning 141 avian metres. No treasure has been found till the writing of this news though. But there is a guarantee that people will find the treasure since no cave that big in size has no treasure inside it. The location of the cave is in Forest 22.”
Runny also read that 25percent of the treasure has to be given to the crow government
“Forest 22? That’s a very desolate forest. No one has ever been there because of its thick overgrowth.
But it does kind of make sense since a place where no one has visited will be the most likely to have untouched treasure.
You know what, I’m gonna go to the cave.”
They originally had decided to start the expedition on October 30th but delays by everyone caused it get postponed a year later on November 14th of the next year
Runny hosts an expedition to see who can come with him on this voyage, promising them 100 clearwings (avian currency) each.
Totally, he amassed over 20 people.
In his group there were many birds — 7 eagles, 3 crows, 4 sparrows, 4 vultures, and 2 woodpeckers.
Out of them, the woodpeckers and crows were very close to Runny.
The crows were Runny’s 3 friends — Ethan, Noah, and Brian.
The two woodpeckers were sent by his friend Willsley the woodpecker.
Runny told everyone to bring their own supplies.
At dawn, the gang met up. They decided to fly to the forest and then eat.
They flew for a long time. During their long voyage, they saw many plains and the white clouds in the sky that looked just like a white paintbrush stroking the vibrant blue canvas. Just then the sun was about to set.
Runny told everyone to stop and perch at that nearby tree. The sun was setting right in between two mountains.
The once vibrant blue canvas and the orange brushstrokes were no more. Now orange brushstrokes as gentle as wild honey dripping soared across the sky faster than an eagle who was in a flying competition.
“Wow!” the group exclaimed together.
After that, they decided to camp there for the night.
Many of the birds in Runny’s group were rivals to each other, but for this one special occasion they decided to be friends and live peacefully together.
They had dinner and slept well.
The next morning they set out for the forest.
After one day of travelling they finally reached the forest at 12 noon.
The crows and sparrows stayed in an area to make camp.
The woodpeckers had gone to fetch wood to make fire, accompanied by the vultures, and 3 of the eagles stayed behind to offer protection to the crows and sparrows, while the rest of the eagles went ahead in search of the cave.
After 2–3 hours or so, the entire gang regrouped.
The woodpeckers, crows, and vultures had come back and had set up a nice place to stay for the night.
It was long since all of them had to sleep on the ground.
Meanwhile, the eagles who had been searching for the cave came back with nothing. The only good thing they came back with was some food for the group to eat.
They slept peacefully that night under the gaze of the stars.
The next morning the entire group went out hunting for the cave.
They placed 2 vultures in camp to protect it.
The others took flight and decided not to split up.
After hours of flying, the vultures decided to break their promise and head back home, leaving the 7 eagles to hunt.
After that, the eagles were searching for long, but even after days of searching their efforts were for nothing.
One day, one eagle, tired of their fruitless search, decided to veer down a little bit into the forest.
But alas, he couldn't control his lean and fell straight into some vines.
The eagle expected to see himself on the ground, but to his surprise he went straight through the branches.
Then he called after the other eagles, who followed him into the cave.
Some of them decided to stay in the cave while the other eagles decided to get the other birds.
After 3 hours of flying to camp and then to the cave again, all of them finally reached the cave.
They made sure to grab all their belongings and important items.
The team explored the cave.
“Look there, it looks something like a mural,” a woodpecker pointed out.
It indeed was a mural, a quite disturbing one. It showed a weird four-winged ostrich-like creature eating something that couldn’t be visible, since it was so blurry.
Then they walked deeper into the cave, seeing more strange artifacts like some bones.
They heard strange noises, almost like the cave itself was alive.
Then they heard a loud sound

It sounded like a heavy wave or a lava explosion, so the entire group thought that it was a wave and that the secret to the cave was an infinite reservoir of water.
Then Brian leaned up against the wall and said, “There is a secret wall here maybe not really I don’t know”
And sure enough, there was one.
“Wow, you’re amazing, Brian,” said the group.
And it looked like the group had once again predicted right — there was what seemed like an infinite reservoir of water.
The group gratefully drank the water.
They also saw some flesh lying there and decided to eat those as well.
“WHO ARE YOU TO EAT MY FOOD?” a mysterious voice said.

"This entire edition is a joy to read, but I wanted to specifically mention how much I appreciated several of the contributions in the 'Young Magic' section. The painting "LONELY BOAT" by Juan Lenju has such a beautiful, evocative use of color—it really stirred a sense of calm contemplation in me. Similarly, the deep emotion conveyed in Anura Parida's poem "WILL I LOSE MYSELF IN THE DARK?" was truly moving and very well-written for their age. I also thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in Rohith V Rahul's story "RUNNY AND THE FORBIDDEN CAVE PART-1"; it has a fantastic sense of adventure and left me eager for Part 2! Lastly, Shreyansh Subudhi's painting "BOITA BANDHANA" is vibrant and captures the spirit of the festival beautifully. Thank you to all these talented young artists and writers for sharing their work with us!"
