Jwala - The Blaze of Fire
Jwala is an Indore-based non-profit, self-funded organisation which aims at revolutionising the status of women in India. It was formed after the Nirbhaya incident of 2012 which had shaken up not only Delhi where it happened, but the whole country. Dr. Divya Gupta, a Gynaecologist of Indore spearheaded the movement to make women resilient and fearless. Potentially it was to ignite the spark within every woman into a Jwala or a Blaze of Fire. Dr. Gupta was also deeply influenced by the incident of molestation of a teen-aged girl by a mob of thirty men outside a bar in Guwahati.
Today Jwala as an NGO successfully runs four programmes:
- Self-Defence for women
- A Gender Sensitization Module
- A Recycling Project
- A 100% Bio-Degradable Sanitary Napkins project.
So far it has conducted more than 97 Self-Defence workshops, training more than 15000 women, 500 Gender Sensitization modules and enrolled more than 500 women in Self Help Groups. It has also tried to ensure economic independence for women through various projects like Making Bags out of Paper and Waste Cloth and production of Biodegradable Sanitary Napkins. Their Website proudly proclaims that they have trained more than 85000 women.
Dr. Gupta's words are truly inspiring:
"Jwala was born out of frustration, anger and helplessness that had been simmering for a long time. We have seen so many cases of rape and abuse of women. There is a point after which you just have to do something."
Attached is a video clip in which she explains the reasons which makes her Jwala a Blaze of Pride for the whole nation!
