HOMOGRAPHS, SPECIALITY OF UPENDRA BHANJA
World literature is replete with the stories love and anguish of separation which does not need any introduction. Labanyabati the master piece of Odia poet Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja is in the forefront.
The style of presentation, specially a word with different meanings(Homographs are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings) add to the versatility of the rhyme.
The effects of an overcast sky on pangs of separation is described in such a manner that while reading one will feel lively.
Part of the poem is translated into English.
ANGUISH OF SEPARATION
(In the eyes of Bhanja)
Behold, behold !
The sky with dark clouds
Embellished with
Garlands of white egrets,
and prettified.
Arouses desire of love!
Affects pangs of separation,
makes it worse,
And worries the maids.
Concerned maids
Remembering Lord Shiva,
For their princess’ smooth sailing
In the sea of separation from her lover.
Rains cooleth,
welcome always
But inauspicious like snakes
For those suffering from
pangs of separation.
Rains with flashes of lightening
extinguish the mountain blaze
Caused by scorching sun,
Paradoxically adds
To the fire of separation,
Ignited in the heart,
And each flash of lightening
Keeps it ablaze,
Exacerbate the anguish
To force her lie listless on the ground
Covering both the ears
With her palms.
Tears rolling down from the eyes
Breathing shallow and fast,
Such is her condition,
A force blow,
Can lift her and throw.
Soothing balms provided
By the maids
Is her savior of
the situation.
