                                   UNIQUENESS   OF BAIDEHISHA VILAS

 

World literature is replete with the stories of Ramayan  which does not need any introduction.

Baidehisha  Vilasa the master piece of Odiya poet Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja is in the forefront. The book of poetry is in four volumes, and all the stanzas start with ba,which is unique.

The style of presentation,  specially  a word with different meanings(Homographs are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings) add to the  versatility of the rhyme.

A simple event such as  Sita  garlanding Rama ,the theme of this poem in English is described  comprehensively  which speak volumes of the Poet’s  familiarity with the culture of the society.

I am incorporating the version of Odia as well .Anybody interested please translate it  into English ,you may please add to my translation ,or modify.

1-Bibhushana – flower either paddy flower or coconut flower.

2 -Bibhushana  - to adorn

2 -Baranasire- Vignaraj Ganesh.As before any ritual first to be worshipped lord Ganesh

4 -Baran-garlanding,

Sita- means furrow.As born during tilling the land named Sita,

Sita- means plough

 

 

 

Dr. (Major) B. C. Nayak is an Anaesthetist who did his MBBS from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, Odisha. He is an MD from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune and an FCCP from the College of Chest Physicians New Delhi. He served in Indian Army for ten years (1975-1985) and had a stint of five years in the Royal Army of Muscat. Since 1993 he is working as the Chief Consultant Anaesthetist, Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at the Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital, Cochin

    Kudos to Dr Nayak for his superb efforts to bring the jewel in the crown of Odia literature to a wider readership. Upendra Bhanja championed the "Reeti" style of Poetry and richly deserved the epithet, "Kabi Samrat" (The Emperor of Poets). The colourful images are very apt.

    Baidehisha Vilas is very difficult to translate into english.Had it been properly translated into english it would have been definitely fetched nobel prize ! Dr Nayak's efforts to translate it is definitely praiseworthy. I wish him success in this experiment.

    Good effort by Dr Baishnab Nayak to translate the lines from Baidehisha Bilasha. Knowing very well that the translation of Upendra Bhanja, with the best of effort, can not impart the same beauty of the original, Dr. Nayak has made a praiseworthy attempt.
